Renewals explained

What businesses usually ask about renewals

No prices, no sales talk — just how business contracts tend to work.

What happens if my contract ends and I do nothing?

Your supply carries on, but the account usually moves onto out-of-contract or deemed rates set by the supplier. These are normally a good deal higher than an agreed contract price, and they stay in place until a new contract is arranged.

What is a rollover contract?

Some agreements renew automatically for a further fixed term if you don't give notice in time. The renewal price is set by the supplier rather than negotiated, which is why the notice date matters as much as the end date.

How early can I renew?

You don't have to wait for the contract to end. Depending on the supplier and meter type, a new agreement can often be arranged well in advance — in many cases up to around twelve months ahead. Reviewing early gives you time to look at options rather than accepting whatever lands in the post.

How long are business contracts usually?

Fixed terms typically run from one to five years. Shorter terms give flexibility; longer terms give budget certainty. The right length depends on how settled the premises are and how comfortable you are with price movement.

Will there be a credit check?

Most suppliers credit check a business before offering a contract. Depending on the result they may offer standard terms, ask for a security deposit, or offer a different contract structure. Newer businesses sometimes have fewer suppliers to choose from.

I only need a short-term supply — is that possible?

Sometimes. Landlords and property managers with vacant or between-tenant units often need shorter or more flexible arrangements. Availability varies by supplier and by market conditions, so it's worth asking rather than assuming.

Does my type of business affect the price?

It can. Some suppliers price differently by sector or by how predictable the usage pattern is. That's one of the reasons it's worth looking at more than one supplier.
